DEPARTMENT OF TRANSFUSION MEDICINE AND IMMUNOHEMATOLOGY

The department of transfusion medicine which is situated above casualty in the first floor of NMCH, caters to transfusion requirements of NMCH, IMCH, ICD, SuperSpeciality, PMSSY Block and Dental college.
License for functioning was obtained in 1997 and the first head of the department was Dr. V.P Sasidharan.

Working of the Department

This is an emergency department with round the clock service.
Blood donor registration time- 8am – 1.30 pm (all days except sunday)
Elective tests like direct and indirect coombs test- 8am - 5pm (all days).
Outdoor voluntary blood donation camps are conducted. 

Facilities Available

1)Whole blood collection and blood component preparation -
Packed red blood cells (PRBC)
Platelet concentrate (PC)
Fresh frozen plasma (FFP)
Cryoprecipitate

2) Donor Apheresis -
Plateletpheresis  was started from 2016. Procedure is highly beneficial for patients with very low platelet counts.  

3) All blood issued is screened for transfusion transmitted diseases -
HIV, Hepatitis B, HCV (all by Elisa), Malaria (Card Test), Syphilis (RPR)

4) Coagulation factor assay

50 Antibody screening and detection in selected cases. 

 

Academics

Training for junior residents of pathology, microbiology, biochemistry and physiology.
Theory and practical classes for MBBS students.
Theory and practical classes for BSC, MlT and DMIT students.

 

New Procedures Started

1. Chemiluminescense methord of screening of transfusion transmitted deseases has been introduced

2. Providing leukoreduced blood to thalassemia patients

3. New Apheresis machine (Spectra Opia) installed

 Prof. Dr. V. P. Sasidharan joined MBBS in 1978 at Govt Medical college Kozhikode. Joined as a tutor at Govt Medical College Kozhikode. Joined as professor at Govt medical college Thiruvananthapuram.. He became deputy Superintent at govt medical college Kozhikode in 2005 He joined as principal at Manjeri govt medical college in  2015.He became principal of Govt Medical College Kozhikode in 2016.
